Project Assignment #6 – Portrait Pastel Painting – Like the title suggests. Many if not most of my students had never used pastels before this assignment. These incredible students were both apprehensive and basically afraid of this medium. It is not an easy medium (as none of what we do or medium we use is). It is called pastel painting because it is essentially painting. Through direct mixing (mixing and blending the soft pastel pigments right on the rough drawing / painting surface) we attempt to arrive at the color and value needed. It is tricky – these students began nearly terrified, plowed through the fear and learned the temperament of pastels. And of course, succeeded wonderfully. Check them out.
