- Pedagogical Fine Art LineageNote: Begin Reading at BottomLouis de Boullogne 1657 – 1733Boullogne was born and died in Paris. Aged 18 he won the grand prix de peinture and left for Rome in 1676. In 1722, he was chosen to design the medals and mottos for the Academic des inscriptions, receiving a new 1,000 livres pension and the ordre de Saint- Michel. In 1723, he was made rector of the Académie; in 1724, first painter to the king, with letters patent of nobility for him and his descendents; and, in 1725, director of the Académie, offices he held until his death. His students included Cornical, Galloche and Courtin. Louis Galloche 1670 - 1761Galloche was a French painter. A student of Louis de Boullogne; his own students included Francois Lemoyne and Francois Boucher. Francois Lemoyne 1688 – 1737He was born in Paris. In 1701, when he was 13 years old, he entered the Academie de peinture et de sculpture. He studied under Louis Galloche and stayed until 1713. In 1711, Lemoyne won the Prix de Rome. Accepted as a member of the Academie in 1718, he is elected as a professor in 1733. Francois Boucher 1703 – 1770He was a French painter, who studied under Lemoyne was a proponent of Rococo taste, known for his idyllic and voluptuous paintings on classical themes, decorative allegories representing the arts and pastoral occupations, and intended as a sort of two- dimensional furniture. He also painted several portraits of his illustrious patroness, Madame de Pompadour. Jacques-Louis David 1748 – 1825He was a highly influential French painter in the Neoclassical style, Who studied under Boucher and is considered to be the prominent painter of the era. In the 1780’s his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward a classical austerity and severity, chiming with the moral climate of the final years of the ancient regime and embracing the French Revolution. Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres 1780 – 1867Ingres was a French Neoclassical painter who studied under David. Although he considered himself a painter of history in the tradition of Nicolas Poussin and Jacques- Louis David, by the end of his life it was Ingres’ portraits, both painted and drawn, that were recognized as his greatest legacy. Louis LaMothe 1822 - 1869Lamothe was a French academic artist born in Lyons. He is remembered today primarily as the teacher of several more renowned artists, such as Edgar Degas, Henri Regnault, and James Tissot. Lamothe was a pupil of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Jean- Hippolyte Flandrin. Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas 1834 – 1917He was a French artist, who studied under LaMothe and Ingres, is famous for his work in painting, sculpture, printmaking, and drawing. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism although he rejected the term, and preferred to be called a realist. A superb draughtsman, he is especially identified with the subject of dance, and over half his works depict dancers. These display his mastery in the depiction of movement, as did his racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are considered be among the finest in the history of western art. Walter Sickert 1860 – 1942Sickert was born in Munich, Germany in 1860 and died in Bath, England. He was an English Impressionist painter and studied under Degas. He was a cosmopolitan and eccentric who favored ordinary people and urban scenes as his subjects. Sickert worked under Whistler, as well as Degas, in Whistler’s etching studio. Whistler studied under Marc Gabriel Charles Gleyre. Gleyre’s students included: Claude Monet, Pierre - Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Louis-Fredric Schutzenberger and Jean- Fredric Basil. Gleyre and Schutzenberger studied under Paul (Hippolyte) Delaroche Delaroche studied under Baron Antoine-Jean Gros Gros studied under Jacques-Louis David Percy Horton 1897 – 1970He was born in Brighton, England and attended the School of Art there from 1912-1916. His paintings were considered restrained and traditional, usually landscapes and portraiture. He studied under Sickert and at the Royal College of Art in London from 1922-1924 and taught there from 1930 to 1949. In 1949, Horton was elected Ruskin Master of Drawing at Oxford University and remained in this post until his retirement in 1964. Philip Morsberger 1933 –(R.B.Kitaj 1932 – 2007, a classmate of Morsbergers’ who also studied under Horton) Jim Quinn 1952 –He was born in Rochester, New York and studied under Philip Morsberger at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, at Oxford University from 1971-1974. He graduated CFA (Oxon) in 1974. He also graduated from Nazareth College in Rochester in 2003 with a MSEd in Art Education. His early work was heavily influenced by his Ruskin and classical training and is representational in nature concerning portraiture, landscape and figurative paintings. His current work is an integration of the abstract use of shape and color and the continued use of representational subject matter. |
